The release of the Rivonia Treason Trialists was a mojor victory for the African National Congress in its fight for the release of all political prisoners. Wilton Mkwayi, Ahmed Kathrada, Walter Sisulu, Raymond Mhlaba, Andrew Mlangeni, Elias Motsoaledi, Govan Mbeki,Denis Goldberg and later Nelson Mandela and the unbanning of the all political formations created the atmosphere for negotiated political settlement with the apartheid government. In 1976, students in Black townships around Johannesburg took to the streets in protest against an apartheid law that required them to learn in Afrikaans. This was an injunction that added to an already inferior education as part of the apartheid government strategy to educate Black people for manual labour tasks. The uprising quickly spread to other cities such as Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth and the apartheid government responded with the use of force which saw many youth killed and maimed.
