Single sex hostel dwellers during the apartheid government days. Millions of Black South African workers were confined to living in single sex hostels. They were not allowed to bring their families to the cities. In the rural areas, women and children were forced to make a living on the land while money was sent home from the men in the city. Many families spent eleven months apart. The system produced numerous social evils that South African society is still fighting to overcome.
